The other day I traveled to Woodland hills to do a couples massage.
The
husband suffers from chronic low back pain and has 10 herniated disks.
For his massage I use a combination of massage
modalities.
I use orthopedic massage, which is deep massage consisting of a lot of elbow/forearm strokes.
I also use double "back of the hand"
petrisagge across the entire back, from lumbar just above the illiac crest to thru the top of the traps.
One of my regular
clients jokes its the "Deborah steam-roller" and it's one of his favorite parts of the massage,
I agree, it
is very soothing when I have had it done to me by another massage therapist!
Along
with the work on the entire back, I use chiropractic style massage elbow strips thru the lumbar
and into the middle of
the glute,,, then it's onto petrisagge kneading of the mid to upper glute,
into the back and on up to the base of the
shoulder blades - working the erector muscles along the spine.
When this client come into my studio, I generally
do a mini hot stone treatment on his back to start with,
as it relaxes the tension in the back much quicker and allows
the work to go deeper without pain or injury to the client.
The method of hot stones I use is lomi-lomi massage - where coconut oil is first
applied to the skin so the heat of the rocks cannot burn the
client or me,,,
then the stones are stroked across the back until the heat from the massage stones sink into the
back
and the stones grow cool.
Then its time to fish another set from the hot stone heater!
